SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) Treatment Group for Parents

Group-based "SPACE" Treatment for Parents - Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

Are you a parent struggling to help your child cope with anxiety or OCD? Do you feel stuck in a cycle of accommodating their fears, only to see their distress continue or worsen? The SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) Treatment Group is designed to empower parents with the tools to support their child’s growth. It is particularly helpful for families where anxiety has led to patterns of parental accommodation—adjustments made to reduce the child’s distress that unintentionally reinforce their fears. SPACE is designed to break those anxiety-driven family patterns.

What is SPACE?

SPACE is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment developed at Yale University. Unlike traditional child therapy, SPACE works by teaching parents how to respond to their child’s anxiety in a supportive yet non-accommodating way—helping them build resilience and confidence.

What Parents Will Learn in the Group:

    • Reduce accommodations that maintain their child’s anxiety.
    • Respond to their child’s distress with warmth and confidence.
    • Set healthy boundaries without increasing conflict.
    • Support their child in facing fears at their own pace.

Who Can Benefit?

This group is designed for parents who:

      • Have a child with an anxiety disorder, ARFID, or have an adult child who is experiencing “failure to launch.”
      • Feel overwhelmed or exhausted by their child’s anxiety-related needs and find themselves constantly reassuring, modifying routines, or avoiding triggers.
      • Are seeking an alternative to, or an adjunct to, their child’s individual therapy.
      • .Are open to learning new ways to support their child’s resilience.

Why Choose SPACE?

This structured, interactive group provides education, guidance, and peer support from other parents navigating similar challenges. If your child struggles with separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, OCD, or phobias, this program can help you make meaningful changes that benefit the entire family. By changing your responses, you can help your child overcome anxiety—not through pressure, but through supportive action.
